About Heather Farris >
How do I make Pinterest pins for lead magnets or my email list? This is a question I get all the time when I’m on podcasts, or speaking.
People often wonder: “Can I make pins for something other than blog posts?” Of course, I would encourage you to do so. It might feel foreign to create pins for something other than a blog post, but I promise you that you can do it. You’re in the right place.
Let’s talk about the concept of making Pinterest pins for lead magnets in today’s post. I want to show you some examples of lead magnet pins that have worked really well for me.
So you know they exist and are perfectly doable. You might notice a pattern right away.
These particular pins here, with my Pinterest Strategy Guide, are just mockup images. I use the same format for any of my PDFs that I give away for free.
Other variations include images of me. This one, for example, has performed really well over the years—it’s for my Pinterest Workshop.
Other examples are a blog post pin that features a strategy guide. The strategy guide is actually linked inside the blog post, in the sidebar.
I also optimize my blogs to naturally incorporate the next step for people. Whether it’s a free or paid offer, anyone can quickly sign up. I also link to other relevant blog posts, my paid membership, and additional resources.

Direct landing page pins
I also create direct landing page pins—pins that lead straight to a landing page, or sales page.
For example, these pins link to a Free Resource Library on ThriveCart, and also my Keyword Workshop on a dedicated landing page.
Not all my landing pages are on the same platform. I spread them across multiple tools to make it easier for me to share and capture email subscribers. Some are on Shopify, and others are on Leadpages.
For example, if you go to heatherfarris.com/pinterest-strategy-guide, you’ll land on my Leadpages page. This page has been up forever and consistently converts anywhere from 60% to 90% of visitors, depending on whether the traffic is organic or from paid ads.

I’ve shown you my highest-converting Pinterest pins for lead magnets and products or resources. Now, let’s go through the process of actually creating one.
First off, know that you can use pre-made Pinterest templates. I have Canva templates in my Shopify store, plus Canva has pin templates that feature lead magnets, like mockups, that you can explore. All you have to do is change the text and pop in your images and they are mostly ready to go.
If you want traffic don’t rely on something just whipped up! Speed up your pin creation by using templates to get more pins out faster and more often.
These Pinterest templates are great for digital downloads or blog posts & are ready to go. You can start creating pins on Pinterest in minutes.
But it’s wise to not always use just pre-made templates all the time. You need to be skilled to create some of your own pins as well.

First step, locate your lead magnet in your business. You’ll need images of it. Download all of the images you have of your lead magnet, the cover, pages, any mockups you already have. Keep them as JPEG or PNG files.
Then upload these images into a dedicated folder inside of your Canva account. It will be way easier to find them later if you save them into a folder first.

Next, go to Canva’s home screen and open a blank Pinterest pin canvas. Then in your left menus, you can search for or select the template you want to use. Whether it’s one you’ve uploaded or use from Canva. Apply your template and now you’ll need to edit it slightly.
Now, we add the title text Now, we add the title text overlay with great keywords, one of the best practices for creating your pins. You want to rank for specific keywords on Pinterest, so let’s do a quick Pinterest search for “Pinterest strategy,” because that is what I would create pins for in my business for example.
Here I can see other top ranking pins for that search, because Pinterest is a search engine. Then across the top of the search results there are more specific keywords to add on that are suggested you’ll want to review. Those are things that people are talking about and trending.
If what comes up aligns with the content you’re creating or the lead magnet you’re going to be pinning, go with it and select this for your main pin title.
I like “Pinterest Strategy 2025”, so let’s go with that for this example. I’ll copy that keyword and paste it into my blank Canva design for the title text.

Go to your uploaded images of your lead magnet in Canva, and insert them into your design.
Then, you can take a screenshot of the landing page for your freebie and add it to the device mockup on the pin.
Adjust your images and the elements as needed so everything is balanced and neat.
Then last thing I will always adjust:

If you want to go a step further, you can create a moving video pin instead of a static image.
Instead of downloading the design as a PNG, download it as a video. Use the Canva ‘Animate’ options for elements on your pin that will draw attention for a few seconds, like a GIF file.
You can also create talking head videos, where you explain the freebie while showing it on your computer screen.
Or, you can print out your freebie and take your own flatlay photos of your product. Then use your own photos in your pins.

When you use Pinterest pins for lead magnets, it’s a great way for building your email list, and no more worrying whether a platform will disappear overnight.
If a platform shuts down, at least you’ll own your email list. You’ll still be able to communicate with your audience, share updates, and let them know about sales or new free content.
