Now that Pinterest has retired Idea pins, you may be wondering how to make video pins for Pinterest. In today’s post, I will walk you through exactly how to create video pins in four different ways using Canva. These are super simple methods that you can utilize very easily.
Film your own video right on your phone. The cameras on these phones are so good these days that you do not need a fancy blogging camera like mine. Just film some clips with your phone for filming the video content.
I also want to let you know that I do not believe standard images will be the only thing preferred by Pinterest going forward. With the retirement of Idea Pins, as we knew them, they created one unified pin builder where you can still upload both videos or images.
So just like images, I think video will still be very important going forward. In fact, I still think video is important, and they’ve enabled pinners to leave the platform so much easier now with video.

If you’ve watched any of my former videos, I used to say and follow the philosophy that if you were going to use video as a form of a Pinterest pin, it should be very much top-of-funnel content or awareness content. However, I no longer stand by that opinion.
I believe you can create full-funnel content utilizing video now. The number one reason is that you can visit videos straight from the pin now. Pinterest has streamlined the ability to leave the platform from any pin type, which is fantastic.
Meaning you can create video content for every aspect of your funnels and there isn’t a blocked path from Pinterest to wherever you want to send your audience to. So now let’s show you how to create Pinterest video pins utilizing Canva.

This example is great with a video of your product, or just a generic scene, with text overlay. Use a Pinterest video pin template or just full frame. I suggest inserting a full grid frame into the background.
In this example, we will just use a video from Canva’s library. In this example, I stuck a gardening video in there. So whatever your text overlay for your headline is, you will put that on there and then stick your video in.
Ideally, for this example, you would have a video of your own product. That’s what’s going to make this work the best. Remember to also add your logo even if it’s an open source video.

Example number two is a video I filmed on my phone face to camera. Then I dropped that into my Instagram editor and fully edited it using Instagram. And then I downloaded that reel when I was done, and I put it into Canva to add some additional stuff to it.
I tried out different colors in the text overlays, and then I put that bar on the bottom for the text. This is probably the easiest of all of them. You just film some video on your phone face to camera, and then you can add that into Canva and make whatever edits you want to make.

Just like adding multiple videos inside of Instagram or Tiktok to make reels, you can do the same with Canva. Search for the Mobile Video template because you get multiple video pages.
So however many videos you have, that’s how many pages I want you to add, and then to each page, make sure you add that grid. That way, you can drop your video in easily.
You can grab free videos on Pexels, you can also use the videos within Canva if you want to. I don’t like that they removed the ability to filter by horizontal or vertical videos, and I don’t know how to find them now, so it’s become a little bit harder
Drag and drop them into Canva, and then select which video for what slide. Once they’re all uploaded, you will want to put some sort of a Call to Action on the end. You can do that by adding some text onto the screen. With Canva’s new editing features, you can make this look like you made it on Instagram.
In this example, it’s three yoga poses for hip pain in a video slideshow. You could put the yoga pose name on each slide, and then add the call to action. So if you want to say, “Save this for later,” whatever you want your call to action to be. If you want to get fun with it, you can add some elements like image stickers, etc.
Don’t forget to add your branding. We don’t want to create content on Pinterest where people don’t know who we are or represent. We always want to make sure that our brand is represented nicely. I suggest including a logo on each slide or at least your URL, and then you would download this as an MP4 video.

The last example is super interesting. It’s an image and a video in one, which I found compelling. You could show the after-product once it’s completely done, and then you can show the process right along with it. You’re not stuck to using a vertical video in this case. So here’s our example for this.
This is a template I found in Canva templates, but you could make this from scratch with a grid too. Just put your video in one and an image in the other.
The template was designed for a travel blog, but I’ve easily switched this out with food, so you could do anything. If you start with a blank pin go into your elements and grids, it’s this double grid option.
You need all of that to be in the front so the grids don’t try to suck your overlay into them. So if you’re having issues with your layers, you can always go to “Position” and “Layers” and find your layers here to rearrange if needed. So that’s a little hack for you there.
Those are the four styles of video pins that I wanted to show you how to make using Canva. You should be using your own video if you have it.

Now a couple of things to note. On the Pinterest Desktop Builder, you can only upload one video on the desktop. However, if you want to make the same pin-type (like my third example (multiple video clips in a row) on mobile and pull in all the videos from your phone, you can do that. And then you wouldn’t use Canva at all in that situation. You would just use the native builder on your mobile phone, similar to how Instagram works.
I am going to show you, in this case, how to upload your videos using the native uploader on your desktop. So, in this case, I want to show you a video example I already created. From your Pinterest account:
1. Click “Create”
2. Click “Create Pin”
3. Click “Create New”
4. Upload your video
5. Add in all the pin information
6. Click “Publish”
Make sure you add your pin title and description. If there are any other notes that you want to add, this is a great place to do that. So in the notes section, for this yoga exercise example, I would add details like how many moves you would do and how many times you would do them.
If you are e-commerce, your notes would be things like:
The description is for you to input your keywords and write a full Pinterest description about the product. You will add your link, choose your board, tag your topics, and then publish it at that point.
I want to ensure everyone knows exactly how to upload your video pins on Pinterest with the new unified builder that will likely be coming out to everyone by the end of June 2023.
